Annual Physicals Q & A

Do I need an annual physical?

Yes, you need an annual physical exam. Your annual physical exam is a comprehensive evaluation of your whole body and your overall health. It acts as a measuring tool that helps direct your wellness plan and is aimed at maintaining or improving your overall health and preventing the onset of chronic disease.

Your annual physical also gives you and your provider at Fulshear Family Medicine an opportunity to build a trusting patient-doctor relationship. The more you trust your provider, the more likely you are to share your health concerns, which ultimately leads to better care and better health.

What happens during annual physicals?

Because your health needs are unique to you, no annual physical at Fulshear Family Medicine is like another. The specifics of your exam may depend on your age and sex. However, you can expect a comprehensive evaluation that includes:

  • Review of your medical and medication history
  • Review of your family history
  • Assessment of body composition
  • Measurement of heart rate and blood pressure
  • Evaluation of ear, nose, and throat
  • Check of reflexes
  • Palpation of internal organs

The team may also assess vision and hearing. Depending on your age and sex, additional tests may be needed to further assess risk and screen for diseases, such as a blood test or urinalysis.

Fulshear Family Medicine is a full-service practice and has an on-site laboratory so you don’t have to go to another facility to complete any requested blood work. The practice also conducts many diagnostic tests at the office, including stress tests and echocardiograms, which may be used as a screening tool to assess heart health.

After the team has completed your evaluation, they provide an overall assessment of your health and recommendations that help you maintain or prevent chronic illness, such as diet changes, exercise plans, and/or updates of vaccinations.

Do I need an annual physical if I have a chronic disease?

Yes, you need an annual physical, even if you have a chronic disease that requires frequent follow-ups with the team at Fulshear Family Medicine. During your chronic disease management visits, the team focuses on the chronic condition, which may include specific lab work and medication. Though thorough, these exams may not include a check of all your body systems or the screenings you need to assess the risk of other health issues.

The annual exam covers all of your health needs and serves as a wellness tool that may help prevent the onset of other chronic illnesses, as well as worsening of the chronic diseases you currently have.
