DNA Testing Q & A

What DNA testing services are available?

The Fulshear Family Medicine team offers on-site DNA testing services to evaluate risk factors for a variety of conditions based on your genetics. You can receive tests like:

Pathogen panel

A pathogen panel can identify the cause of existing symptoms that relate to infections or disease in the gastrointestinal tract, respiratory tract, or other major symptoms.

Vaginitis panel

A vaginitis panel detects inflammation in the vagina that results from irritants, allergies, or a loss of estrogen.

Respiratory panel

A respiratory panel provides diagnostic information about whether a respiratory infection relates to a bacterial or viral infection.

UTI panel

A urinary tract infection (UTI) panel identifies the root cause of infection in the urinary tract, including structures like the bladder, kidneys, and urethra.

After an evaluation of your symptoms and your overall health, your Fulshear Family Medicine physician can discuss options for DNA testing to confirm a diagnosis.

How is DNA testing done?

The Fulshear Family Medicine team performs many tests in their on-site medical lab to give you fast, accurate diagnostic information about your symptoms and your overall health.

For urinary tract and vaginal infections, the team collects samples of your urine for further evaluation. Other DNA tests require blood work and the staff phlebotomist does in-office blood draws, which are tested at the on-site lab or through outside labs.

What treatment options are available for infections?

Infections that begin due to bacteria can be treated with a course of antibiotics. Your Fulshear Family Medicine provider evaluates your symptoms and can recommend antibiotics or over-the-counter medications to ease your symptoms.

If you must take antibiotics, it’s important that you take all of the medicine to prevent the infection from returning.

When your infection relates to a virus, antibiotics can’t be used for treatment. Instead, your Fulshear Family Medicine provider can recommend home care remedies and over-the-counter medicines to ease symptoms of a viral respiratory infection or other viral conditions.
